At the close of the Carnegie Lake Regatta, CLRA captain Gary Mount shouted to all the black-and-orange clad rowers who had gone directly from a seat in the boat to their assigned regatta duties (and back again, and again in several cases) to gather in front of the registration tent at the foot of the launching docks.
It could mean only one thing: after a six-year draught, the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association had reclaimed the Heebink Bowl, the overall points trophy.
Heebink Bowl tally:
1996 - Carnegie Lake
1997 - Rivanna
1998 - Capital
1999 - Capital
2000 - Carnegie Lake
2001 - Capital
2002 - Capital
2003 - Passaic River
2004 - Capital
2005 - Saugatuck
2006 - Carnegie Lake
The Lakers, as club members are known, were lucky on the day not only in the boats: thunderstorms threatened all day long, but save for a 20-minute late morning downpour (during which the chief referee was apparently the only one caught without full gear), the regatta was nearly high and dry for the duration. This was no mean feat; row2k checked the weather map a couple times during the day to see a 250-mile round system - but it was split in two like someone had put a bowling alley of clear skies down the middle of the storm - and the regatta enjoyed about a 30-mile berth on either side of the lake for the duration.
The regatta featured summer masters regatta sights both routine and extraordinary; a quick breathless partial tally of which follows:
On the whole, a nice kick-off to row2k's coverage of masters rowing this summer.
